The Beginner’s Guide To Chakras

Chakras are energy centers that run through the middle of a person’s body. The chakras can be considered an entire energy system…one that connects a person to the essence of life itself. This energy system contains seven separate (yet intimately connected) disks of energy that each vibrate at different frequencies. In Sanskrit, the word chakra means “wheel” or “disk”.  Chakras can be thought of as spinning disks that each contain a different form of energy.

There are 114 different chakras located throughout the body that work in harmony with 72,000 nadis (energy channels). It is through these energy channels that prana (life force energy) moves and connects with each different chakra in the body.

The seven major chakras are those that run the length of your spine beginning below the buttocks at the perineum and ending at the top of your head. From base to crown, your chakras help to create and maintain balance throughout your entire system by drawing in coded energy from you and your surroundings.

Understanding your Chakra System

In order to understand the life force behind your chakras, it is important to understand exactly how this powerful energy system works. The chakras literally receive the health, energy, life-force and vibration of our immediate environment, as well as vibrate at a subtle energy of their own. Learning about your chakras will open you to a deeper understanding of not only yourself but of the world around you and the energy contained in all things.

When we understand why our bodies work the way they do (and why they react to certain things in our immediate environment), we begin to see the interconnectedness of the whole. Although each chakra contains its own distinct energy, each one works together to bring balance and harmony to the entire system.  It’s when your chakras are balanced, working in perfect accordance with you and the energy that surrounds you that your own imbalances begin to disappear.

You will feel unsurpassed energy when physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual energies are working together rather than contending with one another to find balance. The best way to do this? Understand your chakras both individually and collectively to ensure there is balance and grace at each level of your own unique life path.

The Seven Chakras

Chakra One/Root

Muladhara

Location: Base of spine, close to perineum

Function: Centering, Grounding

Color: Red

Crystals: Red Agate, Clear quartz, Smoky quartz, Ruby, Garnet, Hematite, Bloodstone, Black Onyx, and Red Jasper

Scents: Clove, Frankincense, Myrrh, Honeysuckle, Rosemary, Primrose, Patchouli, and Rosewood

Our connection to the earth is in the first chakra. Chakra one is our foundation, the building block of the entire chakra system. Here we find grounding energy, helping us connect to the earth and build a stable foundation upon which we can shape our lives. Our basic needs (food, water, shelter) are associated with the first chakra.

When the first chakra is balanced, you feel confident and grounded in the things you do. You know what you want and what steps you must take to get there. When out of balance, you will feel ungrounded, unsure of your place in the world. Feeling flighty, nervous, and high strung are all signs there is imbalance in the first chakra. Some issues you may encounter with this energy block are the inability to provide for yourself or your family, not being able to stand up for yourself, or the feeling of abandonment.

Chakra Two/Sacral

Swadhisthana

Location: Just above the navel

Function: Sexuality, Creativity

Color: Orange

Crystals: Orange Calcite, Blue-Green Turquoise, Blue-Green Fluorite, Copper, Imperial Topaz

Scents: Bergamot, Cardamom, Clary Sage, Neroli, Orange, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang & Amber

The second chakra is where we come into the birth of our own personal power and the relationship we have with ourselves, our sexual energy, and the way we relate to money. Chakra two relates to our personal survival and the control we feel in the world on which we have built our foundation.

Balance in chakra two will invoke healthy optimism and balance in one’s life. You’ll be friendly toward other people, feel more creative in your day to day life, and find positive relationships with others. Healthy sexual relationships are experienced, with shared intimacy open and free. Signs of imbalance in chakra two include unharmonious relationships with others, depression, vulnerability, addiction issues, and sexual issues like promiscuity and impotency. Lower back pain, urinary tract issues, and prostate and ovarian issues are all common when the second chakra is blocked.

Chakra Three/Solar Plexus

Manipura

Color: Yellow

Location: Between the sternum and navel

Function: Creativity,

Crystals: Citrine, Yellow Jasper, Golden Calcite, Tiger’s Eye

Scents: Cedarwood, Clove, Coriander, Geranium, Juniper, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang

The third chakra is connected to our will and self-esteem. The subtle energy in this chakra is related to levels of trust, how we see ourselves and others, the strength of one’s character, our self-respect, and the ambition to realize one’s dreams. This is the last of the three lower chakras that connect us to the material plane of existence before we enter our hearts and transcend into the upper three chakras that connect us with spirit.

A healthy third chakra is associated with confidence, clarity, and personal wellbeing.  Willpower, self-esteem, and the ambition to follow your dreams is found in a balanced third chakra. Imbalance in the third chakra will make a person feel intimidated by life, and they will lack the self-confidence it takes to do what you want. Fear is common, often extending to many areas of one’s life. Rejection and failure will continue to surface if this chakra is not tended to and nurtured. Physical issues of imbalance in the third chakra include indigestion, nausea, anorexia, and bulimia.

Chakra Four/Heart

Anahata

Location: Encompassing the heart area, middle of chest

Function: Love, Balance

Color: Green

Crystals: Rose Quartz, Lepidolite, Watermelon Tourmaline, Pink Tourmaline, Green Aventurine, Malachite, Jade

Scents: Bergamot, Geranium, Jasmine, Lemon, Orange, Tangerine, Neroli, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang

The fourth chakra is our heart, and where the three lower chakras that connect us to our material existence merge with the three upper chakras associated with our spiritual selves. The heart chakra is the center of our being, where we experience trust, hope, love, and compassion.

Balance in the fourth chakra will manifest as pure joy, understanding, unconditional love, and the ability to be completely free with both ourselves and others. Relationships are solid and built on trust and understanding. Only when the heart chakra is balanced can we begin to work with the upper three chakras that connect us more closely to spirit. Imbalance in the heart chakra will manifest as sadness, anger, grief, and disconnection. Negative thinking, co-dependency issues, and feelings of unworthiness are all signs that the heart chakra needs to heal. Physical signs of imbalance include problems with the lungs, hypertension, and difficulty breathing.

Chakra Five/Throat

Vishuddha

Location: Center of Throat

Function: Communication

Color: Blue

Crystals: Blue Calcite, Blue Kyanite, Chrysocolla, Celestite, Blue Turquoise, Amazonite, Aquamarine

Scents: Basil, Bergamot, Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint

Our fifth chakra is associated with communication, sound, and our personal self-expression. It also connects us closer to the spiritual realm and the upper two chakras. It helps us to connect the visions we have with reality and allows us to openly express our creativity.

Balance in the throat chakra includes confident self-expression, communication, manifesting thoughts to reality, the realization of your purpose, and enhanced intuitive abilities. Creativity is another aspect of this chakra, and holds a close connection with the creative energy found in the second chakra. Imbalance in the fifth chakra will show up as fear of speaking, inability to speak one’s truth, lack of purpose in life, shyness, speaking too much or saying inappropriate things, and the inability to listen to others. Physical ailments associated with the fifth chakra include dental issues, neck pain, consistent sore throat, thyroid problems, and regularly occurring headaches.

Chakra Six/Third Eye

Anja

Location: Middle of forehead, slightly above the eyebrows

Function: Intuition

Color: Indigo

Crystals: Lapis Lazuli, Azurite, Tanzanite

Scents: Clary Sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Juniper, Patchouli, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Vetiver

The sixth chakra is often referred to as the third eye. It is where we experience intuition and where we find our psychic abilities. It is through the sixth chakra that we see life clearly and know exactly what we want. The sixth chakra is where we transcend ego.

Balance in the sixth chakra includes feeling that we have our lives under control. We are courageously able to do what we want and aren’t afraid to speak our truth. Imbalance in chakra six will often leave people depressed, anxious, and unable to speak with confidence. Feelings of inadequacy are also common when the sixth chakra needs healing. Physical imbalances of this chakra can include headaches, problems with vision, and sinus problems.

Chakra Seven/Crown

Sahasrara

Location: Very top of head

Function: Bliss

Color: Violet, Golden White

Crystals: Amethyst, Apophyllite, Herkimer Diamond, Quartz, White Topaz, White Calcite

Scents: Cedarwood, Frankincense, Jasmine, Lavender, Myrrh, Neroli, Rose, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Vetiver

The seventh chakra is known as the crown. It is in chakra seven where our spiritual nature resides and is our connection to the divine. When connected to a healthy seventh chakra, we live fully in the present moment and no longer allow our past to rule our lives. The crown chakra is truly spirituality in its purest form.

When there is balance in chakra seven, you will feel deeply connected to your spirituality. It is easy to see (and accept) life for what it is, which, in essence, is purely what we make it.  There is a deep sense of connection to others and to our place in the world. Spiritual growth becomes second nature when someone is living with a balanced crown chakra. Imbalance will manifest as loneliness, feelings of isolation, disconnection to one’s spirituality, and the tendency to be motivated by fear rather than love. Physical ailments will show up as nerve pain, headaches, delusions, neurological issues, depression, and insomnia.

Working with Your Chakras

Our chakras are our basic blueprint for the energy that we hold. Each vibrates to different stimulation including color, sound, scent, crystals, and energy work. When you are in tune with the different vibrations that balance each chakra, you will begin to feel the balance that comes from working with your chakras both individually and collectively. Knowing what energy each chakra vibrates at will help when you are ready to open, balance, or work on any issues expressed through a particular chakra.

Color is a huge aspect of each chakra, with each vibrating to the stimulation of the color it represents. Light is also an excellent form of chakra activation and balance, and lighting candles that embody the color of the chakra is an exceptional way to harness their energy. Meditating on the color associated with the chakra is also recommended when working to balance the energy it contains.

Crystal energy is also a considerable part of the vibration of each chakra. There are crystals associated with each chakra that help to balance and raise its vibration. Different crystals carry different energies, and carrying or placing crystals in your home, car, or office that directly reflect the energy of a particular chakra you want to work on is extremely beneficial.

Invoking the energy of certain scents will heighten the energy of the root chakra and help you to better ground to the earth’s energy. Incense or essential oils are great to invoke the sense of smell, and can be burned, added to a bath, or worn as a perfume.

There are countless ways to work with the energy encompassed within each chakra. Understanding the basics of how they work however, can help you begin the balance the energy that each contain.
